We did use the inserts outside of the pocket (AI2 style, just without them both being snapped down) but usually had to wash the cover after each use as it would get wet. (We rarely get more than one use out of any fleece lined diaper cover, so that is not a reflection of this particular diaper, but simply a fact of life with heavy wetting children!).
